The Sealand x WiZmed Ward Bag is a bag for a day on the wards, designed by WiZmed and handmade in Cape Town by Sealand from upcycled materials. It has loops for a stethoscope and tools, a structured inside, and comes in five colours.
Designed on the wards
In hospitals, the small frustrations add up: overfilled pockets, misplaced tools, carrying just enough to get through a ward round but never quite everything you need. For Ashraf Moosa and Waheed Amanjee, the founders of WiZmed, this was daily life, not a design brief.
Both started WiZmed as medical students at the University of Cape Town in 2020, in the middle of a global pandemic. What began as a way to make good medical equipment easier for students to get grew into a business supporting healthcare workers across South Africa. One problem kept coming up, though: not the equipment, but how it was carried.
The gap no one was designing for
Most bags were not built for hospital life. Too small for a real ward round, too bulky for every day, with no structure for the things clinicians rely on: stethoscopes, charts, devices and everything in between.
- Compact slings overloaded until they don't close.
- Two or three bags carried at once.
- Scrub pockets doing a job they were never designed for.
The gap was clear: there was no bag made for the realities of being on the wards.
Where function meets craft
A short drive from the wards of Groote Schuur, in the folds of Table Mountain above Hout Bay, Sealand has been quietly rethinking how gear is made: handcrafted from waste, built to last and designed with purpose.
Sealand works with upcycled and ethically sourced materials, combined with considered design and careful craftsmanship, to make gear that handles real life. This collaboration took that approach somewhere new: the hospital. WiZmed brought the experience of the wards; Sealand brought the craft, the materials and a commitment to sustainability.
“Together, the goal was simple: build something genuinely useful.”
Built around real use
The bag is a Sealand silhouette, scaled up and reworked for frontline healthcare. It was shaped by three questions: what do clinicians actually carry, what needs to be reached quickly, and what gets lost or forgotten during a shift?
What that meant in the design
More capacity and depth
Room for a full ward load, from stethoscopes and tools to charts and devices.
A structured inside
Dedicated spaces keep the things you use most organised and within reach.
Loops for your kit
Loops for a stethoscope and tools, so they are not loose at the bottom of the bag.
Sealand's materials
Durable and wipeable, made to cope with daily hospital life.
A shared purpose
WiZmed was built on access: making essential tools available to the next generation of healthcare workers. Sealand was built on responsibility: making gear from waste and designing it to last. The Ward Bag brings those two ideas together for the students, interns, nurses and doctors who will carry it.
From the corridors of hospitals to the coastline of Hout Bay, the point of the collaboration is that good design starts with understanding the people and places it is for, and the impact of how it is made.
