Buying guide
What equipment will I use as a doctor or student?
This is the whole equipment range in one place. Use the sections below to go straight to the kit your course or ward actually asks for.
Where do I start as a medical student?
Most first clinical rotations ask for the same small set of pocket tools: a pupil torch, a patella hammer, a tuning fork, a tourniquet and a measuring tape, alongside your stethoscope and a blood pressure set. Anatomy years add a dissecting kit, and later years add an otoscope and ophthalmoscope. If you want it all in one order, the equipment bundles group these by year and course, so you are not hunting for each item separately. Faculty lists differ, so check yours before you buy, and skip anything you already own.

Examination tools: hammers, torches, forks and scopes
Patient diagnostics holds the instruments you use at the bedside. Reflex hammers come in Babinski, Taylor and Buck patterns. Pupil torches and penlights cover pupil reactions and throat examination. Tuning forks are sold in 128 Hz for vibration sense and 512 Hz for Weber and Rinne hearing tests. Otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes range from an entry-level WiZmed otoscope up to full-size Welch Allyn diagnostic sets. Physiotherapy and OT students will find goniometers here too.
Blood pressure, temperature and oxygen saturation
Vitals monitoring covers manual aneroid sphygmomanometers, digital thermometers and fingertip pulse oximeters. For learning blood pressure by auscultation you need a manual aneroid set and a stethoscope. A pulse oximeter is a common addition for interns, and it is included in the Ward-Ready Intern Kit. Cuff size matters more than brand: an adult cuff that is too small for the arm reads high.
Ward essentials, consumables and surgical practice
Ward essentials are the small things you reach for every shift: tourniquets, measuring tapes and shears. Consumables include alcohol swabs and wooden tongue depressors. Surgical holds dissecting and suture practice kits, and these are training instruments, not sterile. Textbooks such as the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine sit in their own section. A pocket ECG ruler is worth adding once you start reading ECGs on the ward.
Should I buy Welch Allyn or a starter brand?
It depends on how long you need the instrument to last. An entry-level otoscope is fine for learning the technique in early years. If you will use an otoscope and ophthalmoscope every week as an intern or GP, a Welch Allyn set is the long-term choice, and replacement bulbs, specula and handles are stocked separately so the set can be kept running. The ADC Diagnostix 5110N sits between the two, a 2.5 V pocket otoscope and ophthalmoscope set on AA handles.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
What medical equipment do students need in South Africa?
Usually a stethoscope, a manual blood pressure set, a pupil torch, a patella hammer, a tuning fork, a tourniquet and a measuring tape. Anatomy years add a dissecting kit, and later clinical years often add an otoscope and ophthalmoscope. Always check your faculty's list, as requirements differ by university and course.
Is there a medical student equipment kit?
Yes. The equipment bundles include the WiZmed Student Combo, a First-Year Anatomy Kit, a Ward Kit for students who already own a stethoscope, a Neuro and ENT Exam Kit and a Physio and Rehab Assessment Kit.
Do you deliver equipment outside Cape Town?
Yes. We ship nationwide from Cape Town, with free delivery on qualifying orders; the threshold is shown at checkout. You can also collect for free in Cape Town, Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00.
Are the dissecting and suture kits sterile?
No. The WiZmed dissecting and suture practice kits are made for anatomy labs and suturing practice, and are not sterile. They are not for use on patients.
Do you sell spare parts for Welch Allyn instruments?
Yes. Welch Allyn replacement bulbs for the 22841 Pocket Junior otoscope and the 97250 Professional Plus sets, reusable ear specula and diagnostic set handles are listed under Welch Allyn.
