Buying guide
Which diagnostic tools do I need for clinical exams?
Patient diagnostics is grouped by the examination you are doing. Start with the system your next rotation or OSCE covers.
What do I need for a CNS examination?
A neurological examination kit is usually a patella hammer, a 128 Hz tuning fork for vibration sense, a pupil torch and something for light touch and pinprick. A Buck hammer has a brush and needle built in for sensory testing. The Neuro and ENT Exam Kit puts a Babinski hammer, 512 Hz and 128 Hz forks and a pupil torch in one order.
Ear and eye examination
For ENT and ophthalmology rotations you need an otoscope, and often an ophthalmoscope too. The WiZmed otoscope is an entry-level option with an add-on ophthalmoscope head. Welch Allyn pocket sets are light and run on AA batteries, while the full-size Welch Allyn diagnostic sets use a C-cell handle and metal-built heads. A spare pack of specula is useful if you share an otoscope on rotation.

Physiotherapy and rehab assessment
Physio and OT students measure range of motion with a goniometer: a 12-inch for shoulder, hip and knee and an 8-inch for wrist, elbow and ankle. The Physio and Rehab Assessment Kit includes both, plus a tuning fork, hammer and tapes. A gait belt helps with safe transfers and walking practice.
Clinic equipment
For practices and clinics there are laryngoscope sets with Macintosh blades, a WiZmed dermatoscope with 10× magnification, and a Charder digital BMI scale with a height rod. For mouth and throat examination, keep a pack of wooden tongue depressors with your pen torch.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
What is in a CNS examination kit for medical students?
Typically a patella hammer, a 128 Hz tuning fork for vibration sense, a pupil torch and a tool for sensory testing. The Neuro and ENT Exam Kit adds a 512 Hz fork for Weber and Rinne tests.
Which tuning fork do I need, 128 Hz or 512 Hz?
128 Hz is used for vibration sense in the neurological examination. 512 Hz is used for the Weber and Rinne hearing tests. Many students carry both.
Do I need an otoscope as a medical student?
It depends on your faculty and year. Many students buy one for ENT and paediatric rotations. An entry-level otoscope is enough to learn the technique; a Welch Allyn set suits daily use as an intern or GP.
