Buying guide
Which patella hammer should I buy?
Patella and reflex hammers differ in head shape, weight and extras. Here is how the patterns we stock compare.
Babinski, Taylor or Buck?
The Babinski hammer has a weighted round head on a long handle, which lets the hammer do the work and makes ankle and knee reflexes easier to elicit. It is the one most students carry. The Taylor has a triangular rubber head on a short chrome handle: light and small, with less swing. The Buck hammer adds a built-in brush and needle, so one instrument covers reflexes and sensory testing. If you are unsure, start with the adult Babinski; it is the pattern our customers buy most.

Nylon or stainless steel?
The nylon Babinski has a flexible, tapered handle and comes in Standard or Premium quality. The stainless steel Babinski has a detachable head that sets horizontal or vertical, and a gentle point on the handle for sensory testing. Choose steel if you want one hammer to last through to practice.
Do I need a paediatric hammer?
The paediatric Babinski has a slender handle and smaller head, made for plantar and abdominal reflexes in children. It is useful on paediatric rotations; for general adult examination the adult hammer is enough. The adult and paediatric nylon hammers are the same style, so technique carries over.
Buying a hammer as part of a kit
A hammer is usually needed alongside a pupil torch and tuning fork for the CNS examination. The WiZmed Student Combo and the Neuro and ENT Exam Kit both include the adult Babinski hammer. Buying them together also means one order and one delivery.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
Is a patella hammer the same as a reflex hammer?
Yes. Patella hammer, reflex hammer and tendon hammer all describe the same instrument used to test deep tendon reflexes. The knee jerk at the patellar tendon gives it the common name.
Which reflex hammer do medical students use?
Most students use a Babinski-style hammer because its weighted head and long handle make reflexes easier to elicit. Check your faculty's equipment list in case a specific pattern is required.
What is the Buck hammer's needle for?
The Buck hammer has a needle and brush built into the handle for testing pinprick and light touch during a sensory examination, so you need one less instrument.
