Buying guide
Lab coat or softshell: which jacket do you need?
This section has two kinds of jacket that do different jobs. Here is how to tell which one your course or job actually asks for.
What lab coat do medical students need?
For anatomy dissection, lab practicals, clinical skills sessions and community centre visits, most faculties ask for a doctor's jacket over your clothes. The WiZmed Doctor's Jacket is a polycotton lab coat made for exactly that. It comes in short or long sleeves and in sizes XXS to 4XL. Check your course handbook for whether it specifies a sleeve length. Long sleeves cover more of your arms during dissection; short sleeves are cooler and keep cuffs clear of the bench and your gloves.
How long does a doctor's jacket take?
Our doctor's jackets are made to order and take two to three weeks to manufacture. If your first practical is soon, order now rather than in orientation week, and if your course starts in February, aim to order in the summer holidays. Delivery time is added after manufacturing, or you can collect free from us in Cape Town on weekdays between 10:00 and 16:00.
Starting second-year anatomy?
The Anatomy Pro Pack puts the Doctor's Jacket together with the Premium Student Dissecting Kit and a free Anatomy WiZpin, so you can tick off the jacket and the dissecting instruments in one order. Because the jacket is made to order, it is worth ordering the pack well before the anatomy block starts.
What should I wear over scrubs when it is cold?
A lab coat is not built for warmth. For early rounds, walking between buildings or night shifts, the WiZscrubs Comfort Jacket is a wind-resistant softshell that sits over your scrubs without bulk. It is made in South Africa, in black or navy, in sizes XXS to 2XL, with separate men's and women's cuts. It holds its shape over time. Think of it as the jacket for when you are cold, and the Doctor's Jacket as the one for when your course asks for a coat. The Winter Warmer bundles add a scrub set and a long-sleeve underscrub.

Which size should I choose?
Choose your lab coat size with room to wear it over everyday clothes or a jersey, since it goes on top and you need to reach across a bench comfortably. The Comfort Jacket is cut to sit over scrubs, and comes in XXS to 2XL. If you are unsure, compare the size chart on each product with a jacket that already fits you.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
Is a doctor's jacket the same as a lab coat?
For most students, yes. The WiZmed Doctor's Jacket is a polycotton lab coat for anatomy, lab practicals, skills sessions and community visits.
Short or long sleeves?
Both are available. Some faculties specify one for practicals, so check your course requirements first.
How soon will my doctor's jacket arrive?
It is made to order and takes two to three weeks to manufacture before it ships, so order ahead of your first practical.
What sizes does the Doctor's Jacket come in?
XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL.
Can I wear the Comfort Jacket in the lab?
It is a warm softshell layer for wearing over scrubs, not a lab coat. For practicals your faculty will usually expect the Doctor's Jacket.
