The pocket kit for ward rounds
These are the small tools you will reach for every day on the ward. Here is what each one is for and where to find more choice.
What goes in a student's pocket?
Most medical and nursing students carry a tourniquet, a measuring tape, a pair of shears, a pupil torch and an ECG ruler, alongside their stethoscope. Buying them together saves a separate order for each. The Essentials Combo puts a pupil torch, patella hammer, measuring tape and tourniquet in one box, and the Ward Kit adds a WiZmed aneroid BP set for students who already own a stethoscope.

Tourniquets, shears and tapes
A venepuncture tourniquet with a one-handed buckle is the tool you will use most in your clinical years. Shears come in two lengths: 14 cm nurse shears for a pocket and 18.4 cm EMT shears for clothing and heavy dressings. Measuring tapes range from a plain 150 cm retractable tape to a circumference tape and one with a BMI dial. Each sub-category explains how to choose between them.
Small things that help
A pocket ECG ruler, calibrated for 25 mm/s and 10 mm/mV, gives you a rate scale, rhythm checklist and interval ranges when you are reading a tracing on your own. A retractable ID reel with a carabiner lets you swipe your access card without unclipping it, and a hip clip keeps your stethoscope off your neck. A soft ampoule opener on your key ring protects your fingers when you snap glass ampoules. Physiotherapy students and carers use a gait belt with handles for safer transfers and walking practice.

Questions we get asked
Before you buy
What equipment do first-year medical students need?
It depends on your faculty's list, but most start with a stethoscope, a tourniquet, a measuring tape, a pupil torch and a reflex hammer. Anatomy years may also need a dissecting kit. Our First-Year Anatomy Kit bundles the common items.
Can I buy tourniquets for a whole study group?
Yes. The Smart Saver pack has four of the same reusable WiZmed tourniquets, and the ECG ruler also comes in a pack of three.
How do I clean pocket tools between patients?
Wipe tourniquets, tapes and shears with disinfectant or an alcohol swab between patients. Wash tourniquets in low-temperature water only and do not bleach them, as heat and bleach damage the elastic.
