Buying guide

Choosing a tourniquet for nurses and students

A venepuncture tourniquet should tighten and release with one hand, hold steady pressure and survive being wiped down all day.

What to look for

The WiZmed tourniquet is an elastic strap with a quick-release buckle. You tighten and release it with one hand, so your other hand stays on the patient or the needle. It holds pressure without rolling or pinching and fits a scrub or coat pocket. It comes in 13 colours, which helps when everyone on the ward carries one. It is for blood draws, venesection and IV lines. It is not a trauma tourniquet and will not control arterial bleeding. Wipe it with disinfectant between patients. Wash it in low-temperature water only, and never bleach it.

Buying for a group

The Smart Saver pack has four of the same tourniquets for study groups and wards. Students setting up a first kit can get one in the Essentials Combo with a pupil torch, patella hammer and measuring tape. It is worth keeping a spare in your bag, because tourniquets tend to go missing on busy wards.

Questions we get asked

Before you buy

Is this tourniquet reusable?

Yes. Wipe it with disinfectant between patients. Wash it in low-temperature water only and do not bleach it, because heat and bleach damage the elastic.

Can I use it as a trauma tourniquet?

No. It is a venepuncture tourniquet for routine blood draws and IV lines. It is not designed to control arterial bleeding.

How long should a tourniquet stay on?

Standard teaching is to keep it on no longer than about one minute when drawing blood, and to release it before you remove the needle.
