Which measuring tape for medical students?
A clinical tape needs to wipe clean, retract into a pocket and read in centimetres. The choice comes down to what you measure most.

Standard, PRO or BMI tape?
The WiZmed Measuring Tape is the everyday choice: 150 cm on one side and 60 inches on the other, a fibreglass tape you can wipe with alcohol, and a button that rewinds it. Use it for head circumference, limb girth, wound size and anthropometry. The WiZ Tape PRO is the same length with a clip-on lanyard, so it hangs from your scrubs instead of sinking to the bottom of a pocket. The BMI tape adds a calculator dial in metric and imperial, which is handy for dietetics and community screening.
When do you need a circumference tape?
A circumference tape is made for measuring around something: a limb, a head, an abdomen, or fundal height. Its end slots into the housing to form a loop, which is why its scale starts at 5 cm. It is not for straight-line measurements from zero; use a standard tape for those. We also use one when measuring customers for scrubs.
Buying a full student kit?
The Essentials Combo includes the 150 cm tape with a pupil torch, a patella hammer and a tourniquet in one order.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
What length tape do I need?
150 cm is enough for head, limb and abdominal circumference in almost all adults, and it retracts small enough for a scrub pocket.
Why does the circumference tape start at 5 cm?
The first section slots into the opposite end to make a loop, so the scale starts at 5 cm by design. Use it for measurements around the body, not straight lines.
Can I clean the tape between patients?
Yes. The WiZmed Measuring Tape is fibreglass with a smooth surface that you can wipe with alcohol or disinfectant.
