Your product is genuine. Welch Allyn is owned by Baxter International, which acquired it as part of Hillrom in December 2021. Baxter is moving Welch Allyn packaging and labelling over to Baxter branding, so depending on when a batch was made, the same product can arrive in a Welch Allyn, Hillrom or Baxter box. The device inside, its REF number and its warranty are unchanged.
The short answer
- Welch Allyn → Hillrom (2015) → Baxter (2021).
- The legal manufacturer is still Welch Allyn, Inc.
- Product numbers (REF) and GTIN barcodes have not changed.
- Old and new boxes are used side by side while existing stock runs down.
- Your manufacturer warranty is the same whichever logo is on the carton.
We get a steady stream of messages along the lines of "I ordered a Welch Allyn otoscope but the box says Baxter. Did I get the wrong thing?" It is a fair question. When you have spent several thousand rand on a diagnostic set, an unfamiliar company name on the packaging is unsettling. So here is exactly what is going on.
Who actually owns Welch Allyn?
Welch Allyn has changed hands twice in the last decade.
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1915 | Dr Francis A. Welch and inventor William Noah Allyn found the company in Auburn, New York, after developing the world's first hand-held, direct-illuminating ophthalmoscope. The company later moves to Skaneateles Falls, New York, where it is still headquartered. |
| 2015 | Hill-Rom Holdings acquires Welch Allyn, until then a family-owned business, for roughly USD 2.05 billion, completing the deal on 8 September 2015. Hill-Rom later restyles itself as Hillrom. |
| 2021 | Baxter International completes its acquisition of Hillrom on 13 December 2021 for approximately USD 10.5 billion (around USD 12.5 billion including assumed debt). Welch Allyn comes with it. |
Baxter lists Welch Allyn, Hillrom and Synovis MCA as affiliated brands in its portfolio, and Welch Allyn diagnostic equipment now sits inside Baxter's Front Line Care business.
Why the packaging is changing
After the acquisition, Baxter began rebranding much of the Front Line Care portfolio from Hillrom, Welch Allyn and other legacy brands to Baxter. That covers product labels, device housings, instructions for use and the general-use packaging Welch Allyn users know as the "blue boxes".
In a customer letter in May 2024, Baxter set out the transition and was explicit about what does not change:
“The legal manufacturer will continue to be Welch Allyn, Inc (a subsidiary of Baxter International, Inc). All business transactions (i.e. purchase orders, invoicing, etc) will continue to be transacted with Welch Allyn, Inc. There are no changes to product numbers or related GTIN (Global Trade Identification Number).”
That is the crux of it. The name on the carton is a marketing and trademark decision. The manufacturer of record is still Welch Allyn, Inc., the product codes are identical and the device specification is untouched.
Why one order can contain three different-looking boxes
Baxter's transition notice says the changeover dates are best estimates, depending on demand and on existing stock being used up before new packaging comes in. Baxter is not destroying good stock; it is running it down product line by product line, region by region. So at any moment a South African distributor's shelves can hold:
- Older stock in Welch Allyn packaging
- Transitional stock in Hillrom packaging, often with the "H+" logo
- Current stock in Baxter packaging, usually reading Baxter above Welch Allyn and the product name
How to verify your own unit in about a minute
Check it yourself, without taking our word for it
Check the REF number
Every Welch Allyn device carries a REF (product/model) number, and these did not change. If you ordered a Professional Plus Diagnostic Set 97250-BIL, the box and the device should both read 97250-BIL, whoever's logo is on the front.
Find the serial number on the device
Welch Allyn equipment carries a serial number and reference number on the device itself, usually on the base of the handle or the underside of the instrument head, not only on the carton.
Look up the GTIN
Because the GTINs were left unchanged, you can enter the barcode number into the FDA's public device database at accessgudid.nlm.nih.gov. Genuine units return Welch Allyn, Inc. as the manufacturer.
Use the manufacturer's warranty lookup
Hillrom and Baxter keep an online warranty lookup and an authorised distributor locator, so you can confirm cover directly with the manufacturer.
What this means for your warranty
Nothing about your cover changes because of the box. As authorised distributors of the brands we stock, every Welch Allyn product we sell is genuine and carries its full manufacturer warranty, whichever logo is on the carton.
The manufacturer warranty covers material and manufacturing defects. It does not cover accidental or customer-caused damage, and claims are subject to the manufacturer's approval. If you need to make a claim, contact us and we will arrange it for you; you do not need to deal with Baxter directly.

Our verdict
Whichever you choose, check the REF on the device against the REF on the order. That is the number that matters, not the logo.
Two things this is not
It is not a generic substitution. Where a Welch Allyn device uses another company's technology, such as Masimo pulse oximetry in certain monitors, that third-party branding is unaffected by the Baxter transition.

In short: Welch Allyn is a Baxter company, by way of Hillrom. If your box says Baxter or Hillrom, you have received what you ordered, a genuine Welch Allyn instrument made by Welch Allyn, Inc., under the same product number and with the same warranty. Browse the full Welch Allyn range or the diagnostic sets, and if you are unsure about a unit, send us the REF number and a photo of the box and we will confirm it for you.
Questions people ask
Is a Welch Allyn product in a Baxter box genuine?
Yes. Baxter owns Welch Allyn through its 2021 acquisition of Hillrom and is moving packaging to Baxter branding. The legal manufacturer is still Welch Allyn, Inc., and product numbers and GTINs have not changed.
Why did my two orders arrive in different boxes?
Baxter is changing packaging as existing stock runs out, line by line. Welch Allyn, Hillrom and Baxter boxes can all be on the shelf at the same time, and all contain the same genuine product.
Does the Baxter branding change my warranty?
No. The manufacturer warranty is the same whichever logo is on the carton. Contact us if you need to claim and we will arrange it.
How can I check my unit is genuine?
Match the REF number on the device with the one on your order, find the serial number on the device itself, and look up the barcode GTIN in the FDA's AccessGUDID database, which should show Welch Allyn, Inc. as the manufacturer.
