Buying guide
Which thermometer should you buy?
For most people a digital stick thermometer is the right choice. The differences are speed, accuracy and how easy it is to keep clean between patients.
The range at a glance
Standard digital or ADC Adtemp 413?
The Standard Digital Thermometer is the entry-level option. It reads in about a minute, remembers the last reading and switches itself off. It is fine for home and for a student's pocket. The ADC Adtemp 413 is the step up for the ward. It reads in 30 to 40 seconds, is accurate to ±0.1 °C across 32.0–42.9 °C, meets the ASTM E1112 standard for intermittent thermometers and weighs 11 g. It comes with a scabbard case and five probe sheaths, and its replaceable battery is rated for up to 4,500 measurements.
What about children and non-contact thermometers?
For children, the ADC Adimals 426 has a jumbo display, a friendly design and a water-resistant body. A non-contact infrared thermometer such as the ADC Adtemp 429 reads a forehead in about a second from 4–6 cm, with no contact and no sheaths. That speed suits screening many people, though a stick thermometer remains the usual tool for a careful clinical reading.
Using a stick thermometer well
Use a fresh probe sheath for each patient where you have them, and wipe the tip with an alcohol swab between uses. Wait for the beep before reading, and note the site you used, because oral, axillary and rectal readings differ.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
Which thermometer is most accurate?
Of the stick thermometers we sell, the ADC Adtemp 413 states the tightest accuracy: ±0.1 °C between 32.0 and 42.9 °C. It also meets the ASTM E1112 standard for intermittent clinical thermometers.
How long does a digital thermometer take?
The ADC Adtemp 413 typically reads in 30 to 40 seconds. The Standard Digital Thermometer takes about a minute. Both beep when the reading is ready.
Is a digital thermometer enough for a nursing student?
Yes. A digital stick thermometer is what most students carry. Choose one with probe sheaths, such as the Adtemp 413, if you will use it on more than one person.
What battery does the ADC Adtemp 413 use?
A replaceable 1.55 V LR41 button cell, rated for up to 4,500 measurements.
