Which Littmann stethoscope for children and newborns?
A smaller chestpiece seals properly on a small chest. Littmann makes two sizes, and the right one depends on your patients' age.
Paediatric or Infant?
The Classic II Paediatric has a 3.3 cm floating diaphragm and a 2.5 cm open bell, sized for children. The Classic II Infant has an even smaller 2.7 cm diaphragm for the smallest patients, which suits neonatal work. Both are dual-sided, so you get a diaphragm for high-frequency sounds and a bell for low-frequency sounds, with non-chill rims for patient comfort, 71 cm tubing made without natural rubber latex and a 3-year warranty. The headset is angled to follow the ear canal, and its tension adjusts by squeezing the eartubes together or pulling them apart.

Do I need one, or will an adult stethoscope do?
If you see children only now and then, the Classic III and Cardiology IV both have a paediatric side and will cover you. A dedicated paediatric or infant stethoscope makes sense if you work in paediatrics or neonates daily, or for paediatric rotations where a small chestpiece makes auscultation easier. As a student rotating through paediatrics, the paediatric side of a Classic III is usually enough; buy a dedicated model when small patients are your daily work.
Colours and spares
The Paediatric comes in Caribbean Blue, raspberry, black and red, and a rainbow-finish chestpiece. Replacement diaphragms are sold as kits: 40012 for the Paediatric and 40013 for the Infant. Each kit includes a floating diaphragm with a black rim and a grey rim to fit it to the chestpiece, so you can replace a worn diaphragm without replacing the stethoscope.

Before you buy
Which is the best paediatric stethoscope?
For children, the Littmann Classic II Paediatric with its 3.3 cm diaphragm is the one most clinicians reach for. For newborns and neonatal units, the Classic II Infant's 2.7 cm diaphragm fits better. If you only see children occasionally, a Classic III's paediatric side is enough.
Can a paediatric stethoscope be engraved?
Yes. The chestpiece is too small to engrave, so we laser-engrave the name on the earpieces instead.
What warranty do the Classic II Paediatric and Infant have?
Both carry a 3-year Littmann warranty. We are an authorised Littmann distributor.
